Let’s talk GMRS radios

All,
I’m doing my first trail ride soon and hoping to do more. I’m looking into GMRS radios and don’t know if I’m ready to bite the bullet on a nicer Midland unit on top of the licensing fee. I’m thinking about buying an cheap handheld Amazon radio. Has anybody used one before? Any issues/complaints/etc?

A lot of us have the handhelds.  I got mine on Amazon as well.
Midland 50 Channel Waterproof... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013QIFCLE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It’s an easy way to get started.

I would say that would be fine. The more you do and get going you may (or may not) decide you want more power or a built in unit. Another very inexpensive option I have seen is a lot of the handheld radios for sale on Facebook marketplace.

Some thoughts from the cheap seats. If you are going to buy an upscale base radio... Get one with some power. Midland, Rugged radios both offer great units. Look for a good antenna 6db gain is recommended. With communication radios you get what you pay for. Get the quality equipment up front  install correctly and you good to go. As you go forward on your 4 wheel journey, a hand held radio is a nice addition for dismounted operations, or if you wheel with a new friend that doesn't have a radio.

Cheers

I ended up picking up some Midland handhelds (GXT1000) and they worked perfect on the fall foliage ride. Eventually I may upgrade to a more serious mounted setup but these work great for now so I’m happy with them.
